Make Mistakes On LinkedIn, You Should Never Do

What do you do with your LinkedIn profile?
Do you check it only every once in a while when a connection request comes through? Have you linked it to your Twitter account? Did you never quite remember to sign up in the first place?

As much as it’s convenient to merge our Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram accounts into one large social networking experience, LinkedIn has a special designation: professional networking.

And there is a difference between professional and personal networking, according to LinkedIn Career Expert Nicole Williams: “I see the same mistakes over and over!”

And, on LinkedIn, those faux pas can damage your career.
In fact, data shows that LinkedIn is especially helpful when it comes to landing higher-paying jobs—”informal recruitment” is a favorite of hiring managers aiming to fill positions up there on the payscale.

So whether you’re hunting for a new job, making the most of the one you have or just looking to learn about professional possibilities, avoid these eight big LinkedIn mistakes.

Not Using a Picture
“One of the biggest mistakes I see is no photo,”
” Williams says. “You’re seven times more likely to have your profile viewed if you have one.
Like a house that’s on sale, the assumption is that if there’s no photo, something’s wrong.”

She also makes a great point: If you leave a networking event with a handful of business cards, intending to follow up on LinkedIn, it’s much harder for you to remember who’s who without pictures. A missing photo can easily lead to missed connections.

Putting Up the Wrong Picture

“No dog, no husband, no baby!” Williams says, adding that your photo is meant to show you at your professional—not personal—best. “Especially for mothers getting back into the workforce, a picture of their child doesn’t convey that they’re ready for a full-time job.”

Another photo blunder: Misrepresenting your appearance. “I see older people who are worried about age discrimination use a photo of themselves in their 30s, but an interviewer wasn’t expecting them to look so different. And instead of listening to your answers, the interviewer will think you’re deceptive,” Williams confides. “Unless you’re getting hired for a modeling gig, people are just looking for energy, which you can communicate through great posture, open eyes and a smile.”

Proper Anchor Text Allotment For Good Rankings

A while back once Google released their Penguin update we did a webinar regarding keywords, linking and ranking behind the update.
Today we are going to revisit that data after allowing plenty of time to collect more information and come to some ends about the greatest delivery of anchor text for ranking in Google.

We all know by now that Google does not desire people gaming their algorithm.  Although this their explore results are still a computer generated algorithm – there is not a person sitting there for all search phrases deciding which sites rank and which sites don’t.
Due to this vital reality there will always be ways to improve your rankings by aligning your site with what Google is looking for.

Despite what has been said, link building for superior rankings is not quiet.  Links are still the primary way Google decides what sites to rank where.  The difference is that today those links need to be distributed in a natural manner rather than a keyword based manner
SEOMOZ ran an article where they looked at 10 national brand sites that rank very well in the search engines and bankrupt down the percentages of links by anchor text.
What they came up with is a fine Method for your Hold Link Building.

What was found is that about 65% of the links were exact match, phrase matching or brand matching with regards to the anchor text.  The breakdown between these three categories was 18% exact, 17% phrase and 30% brand.  The further links coming in were frequently divided linking the URL as the anchor text and disparate anchor text.

This is a great way to make your own link building approach.  Using the ratios beyond, here is what a sample link building strategy strength look like for your site, called “Widget World” selling Red Widgets:

For 100 links built, you Should build the Following:
  • 18 Links with Anchor Text of “Red Widgets” – this is the Accurate Match
  • 17 Links with Anchor Text containing Red Widgets, such as “Handy Red Widgets”, Waterproof Red Widgets”, etc – This is the Phrase Match
  • 30 Links with Anchor Text of “Widget World” or slight variation – this is the brand
  • 18 Links with the Anchor Text of “yoursitename.com” – this is the URL
  • 17 Links with Chance anchor text – this could be long tail phrases like “see more about Red Widgets at our site” or simple phrases like “click here” etc.
This is a Simplistic Breakdown, but the data backs up these common ratios as person the target.  Regardless of whether your links are built all naturally or built by you or outsourced, if you go on to this ratio you will not run afoul of Google, and you will see your ranking boost.

When building these links, you may consider getting higher page rank or PR links for the first line item – the exact equivalent phrase.  This will help pump a little more juice through that expression.  When you combine that with the diverse anchor text, adhering to these ratios, you have a winning formula for better rankings.

Finding the higher PR links is not constantly simple, but a good solution is to work with a private link brokering type of company.  These companies work with individual website owners and contract with them to place your links.  This can be helpful, as it gives you access to low cost, high quality links that are not publicly distributed.  For More Information about a good broker of this type check out .
